  • The First Year of Driving: Can In-Vehicle Data Recorder and Parental Involvement Make It Safer?
Abstract: This study focuses on understanding driving behavior of young drivers during their first year of driving. The study examines the impact of providing feedback and parental monitoring on the safety performance of young male drivers. The research utilizes an IVDR (In Vehicle Data Recorder) system, which documents extreme G-forces based events performed by drivers. 242 families of young male drivers participated in the research. Participants were randomly allocated into 4 groups: (1) FFNG - a group in which all members of the family were exposed to feedback on their own and others driving behavior; (2) FFPG - a group similar to the previous group with the addition of personal guidance given to parents on how to enhance their involvement to monitor their sons’ driving; (3) IFNG – a group in which each driver received feedback only on his own driving behavior; (4) CTRL – a control group that received no feedback. The IVDR was installed in the family car for a period of 12 months, starting from the accompanied driving phase and lasting for at least 9 months into the independent driving phase. The collected data was analyzed to investigate the effects of the IVDR on driving performance of young male drivers. The results indicate major benefits to all drivers who received some kind of feedback from the IVDR system compared to the control group which did not receive any feedback. Furthermore, the group in which parents received personal guidance to enhance parental involvement turned out to have the best safety scores.
